DESCRIPTION:DUE TO THE WEATHER WE ARE RESCHEDULING THIS TRIP TO SUNDAY\, OCTOBER 13\, 2019. Everything else remains the same.  \nThis trip picks up where my Sept 7 trip ends. If you do both trips you will see most of the Wild & Scenic Taunton River! \nCheck in time is 9:30 a.m. The trip will begin at 10 a.m. at the launch site\, South Street East in Raynham diagonally across from the Riverbend Condominiums. The trip will end approximately four hours later (2 p.m.) at the Weir Riverfront Park on East Water Street in Taunton. Shuttle service will be provided by the members of TRWA. \nThe registration cost is $15 per person; $10 per person for TRWA members and their families. \nParticipants should supply their own canoe or kayak and an extra paddle and wear a flotation device. Youths under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. DESCRIPTION:Due to high winds from Hurricane Dorian on Saturday we have rescheduled this trip to September 14. \nThe Taunton River is an easy river\, great for anyone wanting to try kayaking or who hasn’t been in a while. \nThis will be a 8 mile trip so beginners will need good upper body strength and balance. DESCRIPTION:Overnight Canoe/Kayak Trip\nFirst day\, the trip begins at Oliver Mill Park\, Nemasket Street near Route 44 in Middleborough. Check-in time is 9 a.m. on Saturday at Oliver Mill. Drop off your canoe/kayak at Oliver Mill and your drive car to Titicut Reservation on Beech St. You’ll be given a ride back to Oliver Mill for the start of the trip. \nDay one ends at Titicut Reservation (overnight stay optional). Second day\, (Sunday) check-in time is 9 a.m. at Titicut Reservation. Again\, you’ll leave your canoe/kayak and drive your car to Weir Waterfront Park. You’ll be given a ride back to Titicut for the start. The trip ends at approximately 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Weir Riverfront Park in Taunton. \nThe trip covers a portion of the Nemasket River\, then a large portion of the Taunton River designated Wild and Scenic by the National Park Service and the U.S. Congress. \nOvernight camping will be at the Camp Titicut Reservation on Beech Street in Bridgewater\, a town conservation area managed by the Bridgewater Conservation Commission\, and also a historical Native American campsite. \nThe cost of the two-day trip is $35 per boat or $25 per boat for TRWA members. Single day trips (Saturday or Sunday) are available at $15 per boat. DESCRIPTION:This is a 6.5 mile trip from Oliver Mill on Route 44 to Titicut Street in Middleboro. Water levels are still high so it could be easy. This river has easy curves but there are several trees we will have to maneuver around. Good upper body strength will be needed to go the 6.5 mile length. \nBring a lunch. We’ll stop half way and take a break. This is an absolutely beautiful river! Lots of wildlife – blue herons\, turtles\, so much more. SUMMARY:Spring Water Quality Monitor Volunteer Training
DESCRIPTION:Become a “Guardian of the Taunton River Watershed!” \nJoin our Water Quality Monitoring Testing Team. \nNo prior technical experience is necessary!\nQualifications: A sense of adventure\, a vehicle\, and a desire to make a difference! \nWe are looking for volunteers willing to be available on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from April to October between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. to collect water samples and record basic observations at various stream sites on the Taunton River and its major tributaries. The water samples are then driven to the Taunton Waste Water Treatment Plant to be dropped off at the Veolia Lab for processing by 8:30 a.m. Most of our current 20 testing sites already have a volunteer(s) assigned to perform the monthly tests. Our greatest need right now is for additional team members and back up testers for each site who would be willing to cover for the regular testers when there are vacations\, appointments or last minute vehicle emergencies. We try to match up volunteers with sites in their geographic area. Currently\, we are testing in Berkley\, Bridgewater\, Dighton\, Middleboro\, Raynham\, and Taunton. Check out our website or Google Map (red teardrops) for a complete list of the sites. Regular team members sample once a month as a back up tester\, depending on how many sites you volunteer to back up\, you may be called upon once or twice a season to perform sampling. Its a great way to “try out” some environmental activism! \nThe TRWA has been collecting data on the health of the Taunton River and its tributaries for 30 years. Keeping this data set running is important. It is an incredible tool for scientists\, legislators\, and environmental regulators–a snapshot of the river’s health and a record of environmental changes over time–and you can play a part in ensuring the continued study of this waterbody and track some changes as upgraded wastewater treatment plants come on line in 2019\, 2021 and 2022. DESCRIPTION:Come see the hidden treasure of southeastern Massachusetts! \nThe trip begins at Oliver Mill Park\, Nemasket Street near Route 44 in Middleborough.   The trip ends on Sunday at Weir Riverfront Park in Taunton.  The trip covers a portion of the Nemasket River\, then a large portion of the Taunton River designated Wild and Scenic by the National Park Service and the U.S. Congress.   \nOvernight camping will be at the Camp Titicut Reservation on Beech Street in Bridgewater\, a town conservation area managed by the Bridgewater Conservation Commission\, and also a historical Native American campsite. \nParticipants can register for either Saturday\, Sunday or both days.  Staying overnight at Camp Titicut Reservation is optional. \nInformation on registration and starting/estimated ending times for each leg of the trip may be found on the event flyer.

DESCRIPTION:Annual Training of Water Quality Monitors   \n Saturday\, February 25\, 2017\n9:45 a.m. to 12 noon \n   In case of inclement weather\, the make-up date will be:  Saturday\,\n   March 4\, 2017\, 9:45 a.m. to 12 noon. \nBecome a “Guardian of the Taunton River Watershed”.  Learn how waters are sampled\, what the results mean\, the challenges facing the river\, and how water quality can be improved. \nWe are seeking additional volunteers to assist in expanding the water quality monitoring program in the Taunton River and its major tributaries.  The training will be held in the Visitors’ Center at the Gertrude M. Boyden Wildlife Refuge\, 1298 Cohannet Street\, Taunton.  Admission is free of charge.  Coffee and doughnuts will be served. \nVolunteers who sampled sites in previous years must attend this training session for an update on the latest sampling procedures.  To give new volunteers additional training in the field\, we will be matching newcomers with experienced monitors as we assign team members to specific sites.   \nThe session will be conducted by Steve Silva and Alex Houtzager\, Coordinators of TRWA’s Sampling Program. No prior technical experience is necessary the sampling we do is important but not difficult.  This is a great opportunity to learn techniques of testing pollutant levels in our waterways and to enjoy dawn with the inhabitants of our rivers and streams. \nSampling at stream sites is done from March to November\, depending on the weather\, on the 2nd Tuesday morning of each month.  Samples are taken to the Taunton Wastewater Treatment Plant for analysis.  During the training session\, we will verify the sampling sites to be used for testing.  \nYou must be willing to commit about two hours each month to do this testing; however\, we hope to have sufficient members on each sampling location team to provide back-up coverage for vacations\, illness or other times.  On sampling days\, we collect samples from designated sites between 5:30 and 8:00 a.m. so that the water samples may be delivered to the laboratory at the Taunton Wastewater Treatment Plant by 8:30 a.m. \nYour participation will bolster TRWA’s efforts to track water quality at selected sites along the Taunton River and several tributaries.  This monitoring program provides important information on the health of the watershed which has informed regulatory activities.  Most of all\, we want people to be safe\, have fun\, and learn by participating.  For more information go to the TRWA website home page http://savethetaunton.org/ and click on the Water Quality Monitoring Tab. \nTo register for the training session\, e-mail us: Director@savethetaunton.org \nOr call the TRWA office at 508-828-1101 for more information.  (If you reach our voice-mail\, please leave a message and we will get back to you.) \nTaunton River Watershed Alliance  \n1298 Cohannet Street \nTaunton MA   02780 \n508-828-1101 \nwww.savethetaunton.org \n
