Help The Taunton River

Stewardship means thinking about our personal actions

and about our role in the community

Environmental Action in the 21st century is more than supporting international efforts to save endangered species on distant continents. We have threatened animals, plants, and rare habitats right here in the Taunton River watershed that deserve protection too. It’s time to express our support for the environment close to home: thinking globally, but also acting locally.

Actions to take at home:

If you see pollution or dumping in a wetland, stream or river, report it!

Reduce storm water run off from your yard and driveway.

Reduce use of pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides to keep water clean.

Conserve drinking water supplies so that water remains available for the environment:

~ Choose native plants and cut back on outside watering. For more info, visit www.Greenscapes.org

~ Choose water-conservation appliances to reduce use of water in the house

~ Challenge your family meet the goal for responsible water use: 65 gallons per day per person

If you have a private well, take good care of it! In the summertime, follow the same watering restrictions that your town’s water customers are asked to follow.

Actions to take in our community:

Vote “yes” when your town considers adopting the CPA – It’s a wise investment in your own community’s future and makes your town eligible for matching state funds!

Vote “yes” when your water department asks for funds to protect land around town wells or reservoirs – It’s a wise investment to create a buffer zone around your water supply to keep it clean!

Vote “yes” when your Conservation Commission, Open Space Committee, or Board of Selectmen asks to purchase undeveloped land for open space, parks, recreation, and other community needs

Support candidates who have a track record supporting conservation and open space funding

Volunteer with a TRWA River Action Focus Team to protect the stream closest to your home or help water quality samples. Call TRWA at (508) 824-1101 for more information.

Get involved by working with your neighbors to support sensible ‘smart growth’ zoning, local regulations, and management techniques in your community.

Actions that landowners can take:

Learn how your property provides habitat for the birds, animals, and plants that make the Taunton River watershed special

Keep a photo album of the plants and animals you observe on your land. If your camera records date and time, use this feature.

Find out about tax benefits for conserving your land

Businesses can also benefit from conservation tax incentives.

Talk to a conservation expert about how to manage your land to protect wildlife or water supplies

Farmers can receive federal and state grants to return fields to wetlands, create buffers for wildlife, and protect river front areas. For more information, contact your Conservation District or the NRCS/USDA.
